To me, I think hockey’s popularity has lagged because it has always been “regional”. That expansion proved popular enough that more teams came in in the 1970s and through the 80s and 90s and now we are up to 31 teams, soon to be 32. Many people are dissatisfied with Gary Bettman as NHL commissioner, but the league has grown under him, in size and in revenue, which would indicate growing popularity. People who buy and invest in hockey teams are doing it to make a profit, which they couldn’t do if hockey wasn’t popular.
