Even the Rangers/Islanders/Devils in the metro NYC market are fighting over 13% of the population. That is the second largest fanbase in North America (after Toronto, which is gaga over hockey) but still a tiny fraction of the population as a whole.

But to say no hardcore fans? Have you ever lived in a city with an NHL team? Though smallest, NHL fans can also be the most hardcore. Personally, i am not a huge hockey fan. But, hockey playoff games, and overtime, are a whole different deal. The way it works in pro hockey is that players once drafted to a team, sign development contracts and spend years playing in lower leagues, only playing for the NHL team as an occasional call-up, if that. Consequently many players simply are not offered advanced contracts if they don’t play consistently at a high level and are dropped.
